Humboldt County Correctional Facility

It’s been a couple of days since I last blogged, and quite a bit has happened.

For ease of reading, and for my own sake, I’ll list the items as a bullet-point list:

  • Forgot to tell you that we saw a black bear in Florence the other day! He – or she (I didn’t check…) – crossed the road 50 yards from the car… Unexpected and a little freaky! Did not have time to get my camera, amongst the flurry of f-bombs coming from the passenger seat…
  • The Carter House Inn and Restaurant 301: an excellent place in a very inhospitable neighborhood! Being the peace-loving and tree-hugging people we are, we decided to WALK to the restaurant we had picked… We realized how bad it was when we walked past the Correctional Facility, and a bunch of homeless people… We are just happy that we made it back… Like this other guest at the inn told us: “I should have brought my gun!”…
  • As we got out of our hotel to check out the nearby marina, we ran into the Humboldt Pride… After the hot rods in Florence, we now have the… well, same thing, but in Eureka…
  • Talking about the restaurant we had picked… I have to admit I picked it, and I am sorry for it! The place looked great, it was packed (probably the only pub in town) and hopping. But the food just sucked, and their beer just was not worth it. I will not even mention the name of this place, by fear of generating hits to their website!
  • We saw pelicans, seals, and sea-lions in 1 day! I have to say I have an obsession with pelicans (first time I saw some up close!). Not sure where this compulsive love for these animals comes from… Probably some childhood trauma!
  • We visited the quaint town of Trinidad, a few miles north of Eureka. Lovely harbor and beaches.
  • Today, we checked out of the Carter House Inn, and headed for our next destination: Petaluma, California.
  • Just south of Eureka, the highway goes through the Redwood Forest, and we took the alternate route, called ‘Avenue of the Giants’, giving us a much better view of those majestic trees.
  • Once back on the highway, we decided to take a detour and drive through Mendocino. The road from the highway to Mendocino must be the windiest road I’ve ever seen! I’m surprised nobody lost their breakfast in the car!
  • Mendocino is another very cute little coastal town! Definitely worth the stop.
  • The road back to the highway was pretty much as windy as the road leading to it… My shifting up and down was tested today!! (if you drive automatic cars, you can’t understand…)
  • We checked in at the Sheraton Sonoma County, in Petaluma. This place is located at the south of the Sonoma wine region and to the west of the Napa wine region. We are going to be based here for the next few days and do day trips, looking for the perfect winery to take over when we retire…

Later.

G.
