Jordan Manley – Dirt & Snow Photographer

I recently read an article about Jordan Manley in American Photo Magazine. This man is an adventurer who can be found roaming the trails of Southern British Columbia, Canada, with a camera securely strapped to his body… Looking at his splendid photographs, you can tell the man is having fun, whether he is on his skis or his mountain bike! Like most people who have chosen to live by a mountain, the bike/ski combination gives you the opportunity to enjoy […]

Ken Mayer Studios

Being a wine & spirit lover, I spend a lot of time at my local BC liquor store… Besides the obvious appeal for the place, I thoroughly enjoy their internal magazine, called ‘TASTE’. This magazine is not only a big ad for their products, it contains a lot of great information, like recipes and articles on winemakers or bartenders, for instance. The reading is great and the pictures too… (I’m sure you were wondering where I was going with my rambling!) The man is […]

Negative Clarity

Hi folks, I was working on a picture yesterday, and I used the ‘Clarity’ slider in Lightroom. The way I use this slider is to usually increase the clarity to about 40 (I actually created a preset to increase the clarity to 40, the vibrance to 40 and the tone curve to ‘strong contrast’. I now tend to use this preset on all my pictures as a starting point). But for this picture (see original and final below), I used a […]

Irving Penn Dies at 92

An iconic figure of contemporary photography passed away yesterday, Wednesday, October 7th, 2009, in Manhattan, New York. His work includes portraits, fashion and still life. His minimalistic style created a departure from conventional photography at the beginning of his career, but is now recognized as his trademark. His diverse and extensive work is widely respected by his peers. His latest publication is a compilation of tradespeople portraits taken over the years.

Nitty Gritty Effect Masters

A very particular photographic style was born a couple of years ago, that created a huge trend in the industry: the ‘gritty’ effect, also know as the ‘dragan’ effect, which consists in over-sharpening, over-contrasting and under-saturating the original photographs. The result is an extremely striking picture, slightly blurring the boundary between photography and illustration. This is a very neat effect, maybe a tad over-used by now, but this style is still very popular. One of, if not The, pioneer of this […]

Kelly Castro

I love photography and I’m always on the lookout for amazing photographers. The amazing photographer of the day is Kelly Castro. His stunning black & white portraits, in the ‘exteriors’ series, blew me away! The idea of all these portraits taken using the same lighting and processed in the same way is fantastic. The quality of the result is superb, giving you a super-contrasty and sharp portrait, that takes you by the guts!! Check out this series at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kelco/sets/72157603876312247/ and check […]

Lightning Photography

We recently had a major thunderstorm here in the Vancouver (Canada) area. It isn’t that common to witness this phenomenon around here, at least with the intensity of the latest one! I couldn’t free myself from my barbequing duties at the time, but I swore I wouldn’t miss the next one, whenever it would be… Many people think that lightning photography is difficult: “How do you manage to pull the trigger fast enough to catch the lightning??!”. Well, that’s the […]
